About the exhibitor
kiten.kyoto is a brand dedicated to supporting the works of daily life. It was launched by the long-established KatouKen Flag Shop, which has been producing flags, ‘noren’ (traditional Japanese shop curtains), and curtains in Kyoto for over 70 years. For generations, the company has viewed flags and curtains as symbols of its customers' works, carefully crafting each piece with authentic materials, manufacturing methods, and techniques.
The identity of KatouKen Flag Shop lies in 'supporting work through craftsmanship.' kiten.kyoto carries on this ethos, using authentic techniques to deliver items that complement ‘works’ in diversifying lifestyles and unchanging daily lives, offering a little more convenience with an extra touch of excitement.
The brand name 'kiten.kyoto' is inspired by two definitions: the phonetic reading of the verb 'yorisou' (to support) from KatouKen Flag Shop's identity and the term 'kiten' (starting point). This name reflects the brand's aspiration to encourage and support new beginnings in their customers' lives, whether it's trying out new recipes or their first camping experience.
About the products
MAKU.
'MAKU.' is a housework apron inspired by the shibori (gathering) used in curtains, a speciality of the KatouKen Flag Shop. Crafted with durable fabrics and stitching used for curtains and designed for several years of use, this apron is resistant to frequent washing, making it versatile for various settings, from daily cooking to weekend outdoor activities.
NOREN.
'NOREN.' is kiten.kyoto's take on a Kappo-gi (Japanese-style apron) with slits in the back and sides, inspired by noren. This apron not only protects against dirt and stains but also provides comfort for various daily chores, thanks to its adjustable ventilation with functional strings and slits placed in multiple sections. Its stylish design also makes it suitable for stepping out on short errands in the neighbourhood.
HANNOREN.
'HANNOREN.' is a functional work apron with a slit inspired by noren. Crafted with the same fabrics and techniques used to produce noren, it is resistant to stains and friction. The apron features multifunctional pockets for various tools and a slit design for ease of movement, making it ideal for DIY activities and garden work. Traditionally, a shorter version of the noren, known as han-noren, serves to 'show the inside of the shop'. HANNOREN. draws from this concept, helping to 'organise and display' where the tools are stored.
