We hope it leads to changes in the relationships and possibilities for the precious objects that surround us.
MONO JAPAN 2023 will feature workshops with MONO JAPAN-certified masters from Japan and the Netherlands who will share their knowledge and awareness with attendees.

About this workshop:
In a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a delicate bamboo spoon is used. During this workshop you learn to craft your own Chashaku from beautiful Japanese bamboo! Because knives are used, this workshop is only suitable for adults.
About Hans Pillen:
Hans Pillen was born in 1951 (NL). During my study I did my internship at Sekisui Systembau in Cologne. In 1976 I visited my former colleagues in Japan. After taking part in the tea ceremony, I knew what to do: I wanted to make Chawan!Until 1999 I used the turning technique. After taking classes in the Urasenke Tea Ceremony with Herman Soshu Somsen in Amstelveen, I started shaping my Chawan by hand. Since 2008 I have also made Chashaku and Wagashi, for which I have followed several workshops in Japan. I’m proud to know that my Chawan and Chashaku are used by teamasters all over the world.
On June 17, 2015 my Chashaku sensei Miyaha Shoho gave me my Chashaku maker name: 蘭芳 = Ranpo (Ranho becomes Ranpo). Ran (蘭) comes from Oranda (和蘭陀 = Holland) and Ho (芳) comes from Shoho (尚芳) the Chashaku maker name of my sensei Miyaha san.

About this workshop:
Authentic Japanese green tea ceremony held by Haruka Matsuo. You will experience meditative precious time with drinking Gyokuro green tea with special sweets. The Japanese tea ceremony is a series of precise actions (in silence) to be in the here and now and to experience connectedness with each other and nature. Haruka performs Japanese Sado - Senchado Oubakubaisa-Ryu with Banko Yaki tea ware which was made by puzzled wooden mould for Gyokuro green tea.
A tea ceremony will lead you to discover your inner silent moment.

Kigata Banko Yaki was invented 190 years ago by Japanese craft artist Yusetsu Mori (1808-1882). He applied a puzzled wooden mold technique to teapot-making for green tea ceremonies. After the teapot is shaped, the wooden mold can be cleverly deconstructed and removed from inside. This technique allows the teapots to keep the warm handmade feel while being very thin and light, perfectly suitable for preparing green tea.
Japanese artist Haruka Matsuo graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts and Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam. Having studied under Seigetsu Iriyama (1922-2014), Haruka is the 9th successor of Kigata Banko Yaki technique. She adds elements from her own artworks into each tea set giving them a light and modern look.
Meanwhile, the molds that these tea sets are made with, are over 120 years old.

Would you like to create your own teacup for your ceremony?
You will be guided step by step to make your own teacup with Japanese traditional wooden mould.
You hold your own handmade teacup filled with warm tea.
This craft, using a special puzzled wooden mould to make tea pots, was invented 190 years ago by a Japanese craftsman Yusetsu Mori (1808-1882). Yusetsu applied the puzzled wood mould technique to make teapots for green tea ceremonies - the technique was once used to make Japanese paper bamboo lamps. In Kigata Banko Yaki, a piece of high quality thinly pressed clay is wrapped around the wooden form, with a layer of Japanese special Kakishibu paper (柿渋紙, made from persimmon juice).

Even if you are a complete Shogi beginner, you will be able to play Shogi with Shogito. Please take this opportunity to enjoy shogi.
After a short instruction on how to play shogi, you can choose your favorite size from the shogi board or three smaller size shogi boards and play with shogi.

About this workshop
Onion shio-koji is made from koji, a traditional Japanese fermented food. Onion shio-koji can be used in an unlimited number of ways, such as in egg rolls, instant soups, dressings and marinades, spread on bread, marinated meats, used in stir-fries and to add depth to pasta sauces. Not only does it taste great, but it is also a natural seasoning that is gentle on the body as the plentiful enzymes help to promote digestion and relieve fatigue.
In this workshop, you will learn about koji and its enzymes, and taste the ready-made onion shio koji. You will then grate onions yourself and make your own onion shio-koji to take home.
The amount of koji to be prepared is around 300㎖. Basically, the most standard rice koji is used, but if you wish, you can also choose to use a slightly special type of koji called black koji, which produces citric acid. This will be onion shio-koji with a slight sourness added. When you register, please let us know whether you would like white or black onion shio-koji. If you do not indicate your preference, we will prepare white koji.
The workshop will bein English. There are no special things to bring. Please register at least three days before the event.
About Marika Groen Kawaguchi
Marika Groen is a kojiologist, travelling brewer, photographer, writer, and the head of Malica Ferments. She was born in Japan, and is now based in Europe, where she shares philosophy and mythology of koji-making through three-day “Kojiology'' classes. In between instructing koji, miso, shoyu, doburoku sake, natto and a broad range of fermentation classes, she organises an annual fermentation tour with brewery visits, field work, and wild-crafting tours. In 2021 she published the artistic manual Cosy Koji as a visual collaboration with her fellow fermentaters.

About this workshop
Mud dyeing, a natural dyeing technique passed down in Amami Oshima since ancient times, dyes colours through a chemical reaction between the dye extracted from the Yeddo Hawthorn native to the Amami island and iron-rich mud. Dye your own natural materials (textile cloth, paper, wood, leather, etc.) with the colours of Amami Oshima.
Mud dyeing workshop by Yukihito Kanai of Kanai Kogei, who also participated as Mud Dye craftsman during MONO JAPAN 2017 and MJ ONLINE AIR. This special workshop uses Amami Oshima Yeddo Hawthorn and mud in the dye processes. Due to the unique smell of mud dyeing, the workshop will be held outdoors thanks to the cooperation of Mediamatic, who have kindly provided the venue.
What to prepare and other notes:
Bring a bag to take the dyed items home (as they are wet), gloves and an apron.
Please wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
Bring the items you want to dye (up to 300g).
About Yukihito Kanai
Yukihito Kanai runs KANAI KOUGEI and inherits the mud-dyeing techniques handed down in the Amami Oshima island to the present day. Not bounded by the framework of traditional crafts, he creates unique natural dye products at his own mud dye workshop at Amami Oshima island.

About this workshop
Experience making a small bamboo basket using traditional techniques! The characteristics of this bamboo basket is its wavy weaving on four sides, using a thin bamboo material called "Higo".
Participants will learn the basic weaving of Square plaiting, or Cross pattern (yotsume ami) and experience the elasticity of the bamboo to make this traditional bamboo basket called Shikainami-Hanakago.
Completed size is approximately 120 mm in diameter, 100 mm in height.

Chikara Kojima’s work focuses on traditional dyeing and braiding techniques in Oita prefecture. He is actively incorporating modelling that makes the best use of the characteristics of each material by combining materials other than bamboo, and is engaged in activities that go beyond the frameworks of general bamboo crafts.
He is the instructor of Tsukumi City Bamboo Crafts Class since 2016 in his hometown, Tsukumi City and gives lectures for the Tsukumi Bamboo Craft club. He also lectures at employment support facilities in Oita Prefecture to engage in activities to protect handcrafts made of domestic bamboo, where the craftsmen are ageing rapidly without successors.
Taking advantage of his experience as a musician before learning bamboo craftsmanship, he is also a musician and a performer. He served as Oita representative of the bamboo creative musical instrument group "Takerin Resonance Project" in Kitakyushu City. He is active in both bamboo musical instrument production and performance.

A papermaking workshop using bamboo fiber to make bamboo paper.
Bamboo has long been used in Japan for both food and craft in everyday life. It is deeply ingrained into Japanese lifestyles, industries, and arts. However, in the process of modernization the use of plastics has risen and the devastation of bamboo has become a social problem in Japan.
In recent years, nanotechnology-based methods of utilizing bamboo materials have been emerging. This technology is expanding the possibilities of bamboo’s use in modern lifestyles. Bamboo artist Chikara Kojima will give a papermaking workshop using nanotechnology-based bamboo fiber as material.
The workshop is made in collaboration with Oita Future Bamboo Project Japan.
