Kumi Sugaï at Bisou Gallery

During MONO Japan, Bisou Gallery presents the wonderful work of Japanese artist Kumi Sugaï (1919-1996). Bisou Gallery offers a broad and ever changing selection of Sugai’s work in edition, ranging from early etchings to late silkscreens and lithographs and will present a vivid mix of his graphic work, especially curated for MONO Japan. All of the shown works can also be acquired.
Kumi Sugaï was a painter, sculptor and printmaker born in Kobe, Japan. He was part of the first generation of 20th-century Japanese artists to become acquainted with Western painting techniques, but he also explored both typography and Japanese calligraphy.

He dedicated himself to painting and moved to Paris in 1952, being one of the first generation of post-war Japanese artists to join the international avant-garde art scene. In 1955 he made his first work in edition and decided that from now on print work was going to be an important part of his oeuvre.

His artworks were shown in numerous exhibitions around the world and most of his paintings are in the collections of well-known museums (Such as MOMA and Centre Pompidou).

About Bisou Gallery
Bisou was established in the summer of 2016 by Julien Rademaker as an instagram only gallery, in 2020 a first physical location was opened in the eastern docklands of Amsterdam.
