Online Pre-order Event MONO MONTHLY
Plated by Carole Baijings for Maeda Woodworks
MONO MONTHLY April features a new collection of tableware created in collaboration with the Dutch designer Carole Baijings and the Japanese Master craftsman Akihiko Maeda from Maeda Woodworks.
The Dutch designer Carole Baijings and the Japanese master craftsman Maeda-san are working together on different projects. One of them is a collection of different wooden plates decorated with Urushi lacquerware, platinum or hand-painting presented by MONO Monthly.
The plates are made of Hinoki wood that is very light with a refined vein.
The red lacquered leaves are applied by an Urushi master Kurosawa-san in Osaka. Not far from the place where Maeda-san studio is located. The Platinum grid is applied by the specialized company of Hakuichi in Kanazawa, so it is durable in use.
The fluorescent touch of Baijings is found back in the hand painting of Maeda-san.
A plate with pink leaves is in the making. Stay tuned!
ABOUT THE MAKERS
Maeda Woodworks
Director & Danjiri Craftsman, Akihiko Maeda
Born in Osaka, Akihiko Maeda was inspired to become a danjiri craftsman by the region’s danjiri festivals which feature these elaborate wooden carvings.
Maeda honed his craft for a decade before becoming an independent craftsman in 2008. While danjiri carvings are his main focus, Maeda also works in a variety of styles to create a diverse offering of wood carvings.
The beauty and charm of these wood carvings are in the intricate detail, but in recent years the work of danjiri carving has sharply decreased. To keep the traditional craft of danjiri woodcarving alive, Maeda Woodworks intends to spread Japanese woodcarving techniques outside of Japan and around the world.
The company motto is that in woodcarving the possibilities are limitless. Maeda Woodworks believes that anything made of wood has the potential to be carved into works of art — it is the job of the sculptor to find the new value inside of the wood.
Maeda creates unique products by appreciating, valuing, maximizing the potential of wood before adding the warmth of hand craftsmanship. He creates products that combine the traditional techniques of each danjiri craftsman who came before with his own unique style and technique.
What is Danjiri ?
For more than 300 years, danjiri festivals have been held each autumn in the Kansai region near Osaka, Japan.
These festivals feature parades of wooden carts in the shape of shrines or temples. The carts are decorated with intricate wood carvings which are the origin of danjiri and inspire the wooden sculptures produced by Akihiko Maeda's Maeda Woodworks.

This plate features a leaf pattern enhanced by the bright red color of the lacquer. Partially coating lacquer in this way had never been attempted because of the tremendous difficulty and skill required. Thankfully, we have succeeded in perfecting this technique, creating a product that combines the beauty of wood with red lacquer.
This is an extremely rare product with unprecedented use of lacquer. It incorporates lacquer painting by an Osaka-based butsudan (Buddhist altar) craftsman, a traditional craftsman to style this leaf design.
The plates are produced by a Wakayama lacquerware craftsman applying a special coating followed by the application of the lacquer itself.

About the product
Maeda Woodworks uses only the finest Yoshino cypress from Yoshino, Nara, which retains a fine grain, has few knots, and possesses the moist feel unique to Yoshino cypress.
A fine line of tin foil is stamped onto the Yoshino cypress plate, a technique that requires a high level of skill. This product combines the beauty of wood grain with delicate tin leaf into a singular, cohesive item.
Yoshino is one of the most famous hinoki production areas in Japan. Maeda Woodworks uses carefully selected cypress from a long-established woodshop in Yoshino. This particular design was created in collaboration with Dutch designer Carol Baijngs and has been made into a plate using Osaka's renowned woodworking lathe technology.
The tin foil leafing is applied using the excellent technique of Hakuichi, a famous gold leaf shop in Kanazawa. Finally, a lacquerware shop in Wakayama applies a traditional lacquer coating that conveys the grain and feel of the wood on the finished plate.
A remarkable level of Japanese craftsmanship and expertise has gone into creating this most impressive plate.
