Vacant houses tour

About the exhibitor

TOKU targets the many akiya (vacant houses) in Japan as resources to help revitalise various regions in Japan.

The number of akiya in Japan is increasing annually, becoming a more pressing social issue. A lot of the vacant buildings in Shimane Prefecture are high-quality folk houses made from precious woods and materials unavailable for use in new houses. Rather than waiting for these vacant buildings to be demolished or decay over time, TOKU is exploring the possibility of saving these buildings by introducing them to foreigners who are interested in making use of them.

The goal is to create a system that perpetuates traditional culture and technology behind the creation of architectural objects of value.

About the products

TOKU organises field trips for those interested in traditional Japanese culture, architecture, and authenticity. These trips showcase the unique scenery of lovely Shimane, Japan which hosts numerous vacant homes. These experiences serve to facilitate a better understanding of the social issues surrounding vacant buildings in rural Japan. Attendees can experience firsthand the charm of these traditional Japanese buildings and propose their purchase/investment or relocation.
