Shimpei Arima began using Japanese cedar as his main material after creating his signature artwork “Sugicodama”.
Japanese cedar has played an important role in Japanese industries; originally planted for timber to make buildings, ships, furniture and everyday items for centuries. Inspired by this fact, Shimpei Arima’s use of Japanese cedar in his artwork reflects both his own sense of nature and beauty as well as theculture and values of Japan.
“Sugicodama” is the signature artwork of Shimpei Arima. All pieces are made of Japanese cedar, engraved and carefully polished by hand. The delicate shapes and smooth touch of the cedar wood that is used characterize his work. “Sugicodama” are an expression of the environment and story in which the trees have grown, the power of life and the relationship between nature and human beings.
