orit. is the scarf brand from AE HANDKERCHIEF, a 150 years old company which has been solely engaged in the weaving industry for five generations. They produce their textiles with Banshu Ori (Banshu weaving) which is famous for it’s 200 year old history of “yarn dyeing”; where yarns are dyed prior to the weaving process.
By the particular order in which these coloured yarns are then woven into a fabric a large variety of elaborate weaving patterns emerges. Despite its long history, the number of Banshu Ori makers is decreasing due to their aging and the decline in production. AE HANDKERCHIEF started the brand “orit.” to tackle this problem, positively passing on the Banshu Ori to future generations.
‘Woven in Japan’, the brand orit. uses conventional power looms to weave that are much more time- and labor-consuming compared to modern standard weaving machines. These power looms demand many working hours of highly skilled weavers, but the finished fabric with untouched selvedges has a quality uncomparable to other machines.
Due to the slow weaving speed of the power looms there is no excess tension on the yarns resulting in super soft, lightweight woven scarfs with gentle textures and colours.
