ISSHINDO is a manufacturer of luxury gift boxes established in 1956 and based in Arita. The manufacturing of gift boxes is one of Arita’s local industries which can be traced back to the Dutch East India Company and the packaging of Arita Ware. During the period of national isolation of Japan, packaging and packing materials such as wooden boxes, barrels and wrapping papers, played an important role in the export of goods from Deshima (Nagasaki). In the 1950s, cardboard boxes became popular and luxurious packaging boxes were created to add extra value to gift items.
Giving new insight to this boxed packaging, Graphic designer Masahiro Koga from Nagasaki designed a new line of storage products using modern techniques and contemporary aesthetics.
ISSHINDO will present foldable storage boxes which evolved from their well-established luxury gift boxes. By simply lifting the sides, and with the help of integrated magnets these storage boxes with lids are easy to use. The container literally means “to contain” which the designer links to receptiveness. This concept together with the integrity of the handwork, the origami-like minimal design and the color schemes expressing a mix of cultures reflect the spirit of Nagasaki.
